The signs a liner has had its time
When your pool liner breaks, it can turn your dream pool into a nightmare. It rarely happens all at once. First the pattern fades and the vinyl goes chalky, then wrinkles appear that stay put after the water is balanced, then a seam weeps or a small tear opens near a fitting or along the floor.
Another common sign is a liner that pulls loose from the track at the top of the wall. Once the liner is moving or losing water, it is also wetting the ground and the wall behind it, and it rarely gets better on its own. If you are noticing your liner starting to fail, that is the moment to call.
Out with the old liner, in with one set true
Pool liners are a great and affordable alternative to traditional tile, and when properly maintained they can look just as real as expensive tile. That is why replacing a tired liner is usually the right move for an above-ground or wood pool that is otherwise sound.
In general a liner replacement runs in a clear order: the pool is drained, the old liner comes out, the floor and walls are checked and prepped, the new liner is set and pulled smooth, and the pool is filled back up. Because wall replacement is our specialty, an empty pool is also the right moment to look at the wall itself, so a good new liner is not hung on a tired wall.

Looking after the vinyl once it is in
A new liner does its best work when the water around it stays steady. Keep the water level where it belongs rather than letting it drop for weeks, because vinyl left dry above the waterline shrinks and ages faster. Keep the chemistry in range too: water that runs harsh, with too much sanitizer or a low pH, bleaches the pattern and stiffens the vinyl.
Walk the pool each spring when it opens. Look for new wrinkles, a pattern that has gone pale in one spot, or water level that keeps falling when the weather has been dry. If you see any of it, call (586) 463-2090 or (734) 374-2939, Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We would rather look early than have you call us back later.
