Seasonal pool care

Pool opening, closing and winterizing in Clinton Township

Spring openings, fall closings, winterizing and replacement covers, so a Michigan winter does no damage to your pool.

The freeze that finds a pool closed late or closed wrong

Water expands when it freezes, and a pool holds water in places you cannot see: the pump and filter housings, the skimmer, the lines that run under the deck. When that water turns to ice, something has to give. In a Michigan winter, a pool that went into the cold with water still sitting in its equipment is a pool that gets hurt.

The damage shows up in spring. A cracked fitting, a split filter case, a line that weeps at a joint, or a cover that sagged under snow and let leaves and meltwater into the pool. Most of it was avoidable back in the fall. A pool closed late, after the hard freezes have already started, or closed in a hurry with the water level set wrong, is the one that costs the most to open.

Opening in spring, closing in fall, covers in between

Around Clinton Township and across Detroit and the surrounding areas, we handle the full cycle: pool opening and closing, winterizing, and replacement covers. A closing is about getting water out of the places it can do harm, putting the chemistry where it needs to be for the long sit, and covering the pool so it stays clean and shut until the weather turns.

An opening is the reverse, and it is also the first honest look at how the pool came through. The cover comes off, the equipment goes back into service, and the water gets brought back into balance. If winter did leave something behind, a worn cover, a fitting that did not make it, a liner that has started to pull, this is when it gets seen.

If your cover has seen its last winter, we supply replacement covers. We also stock chemicals, filters and accessories, so the things you need for the season come from the same place as the work.

What to check once the water is open

A spring opening is a good moment to walk the whole pool. Look at the wall for rust or bowing, at the liner for fading or wrinkles, at the equipment pad for drips. Small things found in April are cheaper than the same things found in July with a pool full of water behind them.

Keep the water level where it belongs through the season and keep the chemistry steady, because both protect the liner and the wall.
